Charles Barkley has once again made it known that he will not appear in the next ‘NBA 2k’ video game, NBA 2k19.
The Hall of Fame player turned TNT’s “Inside the NBA” analyst and 2k Sports have not been able to financially agree on a specific dollar amount which would make Barkley a fixture in the game for years now. But, Barkley recently said he doesn’t want the money for himself, but for retired NBA players in the National Basketball Players Association.
“Unless they give the retired players X amount of money, they cannot use my likeness,” Barkley said on the Scoop B Radio Podcast. “And I think I’m not even going to think about that anymore. They’re gonna give some money to the retired players, or they’ll never be able to use my likeness, period… My job is to take care of the older players.”
When asked what specific dollar amount would change his mind, Barkley replied in the most Charles Barkley way possible.
“Listen, that game makes millions of dollars, they can use the write-off,” Barkley said. “My phone is always open.”
Barkley’s “Inside the NBA” colleagues Ernie Johnson, Kenny “The Jet” Smith and Shaquille O’Neal have all lend their voices and stature to the video game for pregame, halftime, and postgame reports since 2015. Every year, Barkley is the odd man out.
Charles Barkley isn’t the only NBA legend to hold out of joining the ‘NBA 2k’ brand. Reggie Miller and Rasheed Wallace have not appeared in an ‘NBA 2k’ video game to date.
Many gamers have made replicas of Barkley in previous ‘NBA 2k’ games which are available to download, but they’ll be nothing like crashing the boards and running the fast-break with the “round mound of rebound himself,” Charles Barkley as a playable character.
