Is Kawhi Leonard’s Family the Issue? They Want Him Out of San Antonio

The relationship between the San Antonio Spurs and superstar forward Kawhi Leonard has diminished greatly since suffering a partial tear in his shoulder in January. Numerous rumors have been spread about San Antonio planning to trade Leonard to a larger market and even having a fallout between him and head coach Gregg Popovich.

Things aren’t looking so good for San Antonio, as reports show the team and Leonard have not been on the same page communication-wise for months. Amid worries from the Spurs that Leonard’s agents are trying to get him to a larger market, his representatives are apparently not the only ones who aren’t happy with Leonard’s current situation.

According to Scott Davis of Business Insider, Leonard’s family thinks that playing for the Spurs has made his own individual brand less profitable.

Leonard’s family has never been happy about playing in Texas and feel San Antonio, a small market compared to the likes of New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago has hurt the two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year’s marketability with sponsors. Also, his quiet demeanor and shy personality have caused Leonard to stay quiet all this time.

Leonard’s family has added more fuel to the fire. Whether or not Leonard will demand a trade or San Antonio will look to trade him regardless because of constant drama will be interesting to see.

The 2017-18 season may have been Leonard’s last as a Spur, and if traded, he’ll lose out on the $219 million supermax deal on the table in the summer of 2019.
