Luka Doncic Thinks Five Foreign Players Can Win NBA Title Together

Dallas Mavericks forward Luka Doncic is a 19-year-old rookie who is taking the NBA by storm. Doncic is the frontrunner for 2019 NBA Rookie of the Year averaging 20.7 points (1st among rookies), 7.2 rebounds (2nd among rookies), and 5.6 assists (2nd among rookies) for Dallas in one of the most impressive rookie campaigns in years.

Doncic—a former EuroLeague champion and Most Valuable Player as an 18-year-old in 2018—is not new to accolades or the spotlight. Doncic was one of the leading All-Star vote-getters for the 2019 NBA All-Star game but was snubbed. Although he will not compete in the All-Star game, he is a part of the Rising Stars game playing under teammate Dirk Nowitzki who will coach on ‘Team World’ who will play against ‘U.S. Team’ on Friday, Feb. 15.

During a media session prior to the Rising Stars game on Friday, Doncic was asked to select five current international players to beat an American team of NBA All-Stars and win a championship together.

Doncic listed four players—along with himself—including Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, Dallas Mavericks forward and newly-acquired teammate Kristaps Porzingis, Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic, and Miami Heat guard Goran Dragic.

Doncic’s hypothetical five is full of young NBA stars and veteran Goran Dragic. Is that enough to beat American NBA All-Stars like Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, Golden State Warriors players like forward Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry, Houston Rockets guard James Harden, and New Orleans forward Anthony Davis on one team? Let alone those stars, what about the current All-Star studded cast of the Golden State Warriors’ starting five? Doncic thinks so.

Although Doncic was not selected an All-Star, he may be a replacement for Davis due to his shoulder injury on Thursday, Feb. 14 in New Orleans’ 131-122 loss to Oklahoma City. Whether or not he’ll be announced the replacement player if Davis will miss the All-Star game, Doncic will suit up for ‘Team World’ on Friday night.
