Many thought the Los Angeles Lakers will have another offseason dedicated to rebuilding. With Kawhi Leonard’s supposed uneasiness with the San Antonio Spurs, many suspects he will be on the way out by trade or free-agency as he has one more guaranteed year left on his contract with a player option worth $21.3 million for the 2019-20 season.
Los Angeles may be the team to acquire him. According to Sean Deveney of Sporting News, one NBA executive said the Lakers will “go in hard” for Leonard this offseason.
Since injuring his quad and being cleared by team doctors, Leonard has held off returning to the Spurs and has had put off returning for some time now which has reportedly left a “chilling impact” on the Spurs organization, especially its coaches, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
If the Los Angeles Lakers can not entice San Antonio enough with their dynamic young core of Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, Julius Randle, Brandon Ingram and others in a deal, it would take a lot to sign him. Leonard has the chance to sign a super max contract from San Antonio worth over $200 million. Money sure does talk.
“I think in terms of what the priority is, free agency or a trade, I still think free agency is the priority because you don’t have to give up any of your young core.”
